Ingredients

  • 2 cups green peas (fresh or frozen)

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup milk

  • ¼ cup cooking cream (optional, for extra richness)

  • ¼ tsp salt, or to taste

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

  • A pinch of garlic powder or nutmeg (optional)

  • 4 slices bread

  • Chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Fresh green peas boiling in a stainless steel pot on a stovetop, with bubbling water and steam. Simple cooking process, healthy food preparation, and everyday kitchen scene.

1. Cook the peas

Simmer the peas in boiling water for 3–5 minutes until tender. Drain well and set aside. Frozen peas usually need only a few minutes.

2. Make the creamy sauce

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.

3. Add milk and peas

Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring, until thick and creamy. Add the cream if using, then stir in the peas, salt, pepper and optional garlic powder or nutmeg. Simmer gently for 1–2 minutes.

4. Toast and serve

Toast the bread until golden and crisp. Place two slices on each plate and spoon the hot creamed peas over the top. Finish with black pepper and parsley.

Tips for extra delicious creamed peas

  • For richer flavour: Replace some of the milk with cream.

  • For cheesy creamed peas: Stir in ¼ cup grated cheddar until melted.

  • For a lighter version: Use milk and reduce the butter to 1 tablespoon.

  • For extra crunch: Serve on thick sourdough toast or toasted whole-grain bread.

  • For more protein: Add a poached egg, sliced boiled egg or a sprinkle of grated cheese.

My favourite touch: Add a tiny pinch of nutmeg and plenty of freshly cracked black pepper. They complement the sweetness of the peas beautifully.
